After Care

Some aftercare tips:

  • drink lots of water
  • electrolytes: add lemon, salt & sugar to water and/or coconut water
  • eat healthy such as raw fruits & vegetables, whole foods
  • eat garlic, ginger, and burdock
  • Don’t eat, drink, smoke unhealthy substances if possible
  • take vit c (lots), & zinc (for a few days) as well as at least two hours after/before the zinc take iron and b12 or eat nutritional yeast and dark leafy greens
  • take baths with Epsom Salt
  • acupuncture or massage
  • lavender and aloe can feel good on burns and closed wounds such as from handcuffs
  • find someone to talk to about what happened, observe security culture but talk about the feelings, the impact. Jail is traumatizing that is its point.
  • physical touch including sex with your defined folks is good because it increase dopamine which will help with the trauma feelings.

The following is pulled from a conversation about this aftercare zine mostly regarding why it is important to work with an herbalist. Some day we will edit it to be more pretty. Btw this zine is great just more advanced level and a bit inaccurate in places. The “I” here is Smitty. That is me. If you are on this page you likely know me so Hi! I mean Hi even if you don’t know me. =D

I mean this is just off the top of my head and from what is in the zine (see below) but also want to give an explanation of why i would leave a lot out and encourage folks to get support through us or whomever. I feel like we will probably add to this as time goes on but it is something for right now.

I found a zine ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/14nVeF6auCIqQRBh-q3gyEmV5POiYur_Z/view?usp=sharing ) and it is vetted by myself and someone i trust who is a nurse and herbalist. My, our main issue with it is that it is just too much. I mean great info. I love it as herbal practitioner and geek but idk about giving it out to someone who doesn’t hold that level of knowledge. & despite all that info there is still herbs i would either remove completely or give a precaution around allergens or medication interaction warning. Although there are some, some are not accurate or missing. Honestly this is partly why it is, imho idk, better to actually connect with a person and assess their situation but i know this is not always an option for folks.

The zine i linked does have some good stuff like documenting injuries: http://www.midnightspecial.net/files/shootingthewounded-activist.pdf which people do not always think about but sometimes those injuries can become problems later. Also the hydration is super important for physical resiliency which can help mental resiliency. At least a half a gallon (64 oz, 2 quarts/liters) should be regular. That zine says 50% increase so another quart or 32 oz but depending on a few things i usually do a gallon of water when i am trying to detox or have went through a period of dehydration. & electrolytes are super important – add some lemon, a dash of salt and sugar to water. Coconut water and Emergency are also good options. Epson salt bath – not just relaxing, helps pull toxins from the body but make sure to drink lots of water first because the body is having toxins pulled out and it needs water for that so salt baths can increase dehydration. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, preferably raw. Whole Foods. Garlic, ginger and Burdock or Gobo is readily available here and great root vegetables/herbs that supports the system and detoxify. Dandelion root (or greens) is a herbal detox remedy that a lot of people know but there is a easily confusable look-a-like so not for nobs. I might include this so folks don’t try to go harvest potentially poisonous plants.

The whole portion on herbal steams is great. A lot of the soothing herbs are in Throat Coat by uh Yogi Tea Co (such an awful name) and at levels that shouldn’t cause complications. Echinacea and Elderberry are up for debate right now in regards to how they could interact with covid. Mostly folks are saying they should be ok to use for most people. One of my herbalist friends became concerned that i was taking it bc of how it can interact in immunocompromised folks but i have been using it for a while now so i like know it and it helps. I would not include them because of the possible complications. I don’t really like Echinacea. It is over hyped and is in the rag weed family which a lot of people are allergic to and usually unaware of what plants are in this family. Same with chamomile. I just avoid them. I like goldenseal better but it is harder for a lot of folks to find. Other herbs i skimmed over because i would probably not include them without a conversation with the individual.

The vit C and zinc is legit. Supplemental levels of Zinc should not be taken long term unless advised by a physician. Note (especially for vegans): zinc is competitive with iron absorption. Vegans especially could benefit from some extra b12 and iron if they are anemic at all but taken at least two hours later. i always heard it inhibited absorption but i just saw a scholarly article saying it is competitive which is actually more accurate when i think about how absorption works. If folks don’t want to take supplements than eating some nutritional (brewers) yeast on whatever, popcorn is always a fav mostly for the b12 and those dark leafy greens for iron. Utilizing those cast iron pans also.

ALL Homopathetic medicines have DAIRY in them which can kill some people. I would like just not include them. St. johns Wort has more complications than listed in the zine. It should be fine topically but there has not been any research. I would not include it or the other herbs. For burns lavender is great but essential oils can irritate skin when applied directly. Aloe is great. Adding lav to aloe even better. Nettles are great and around here fairly available and easily recognizable but that might be too much info tbh. Magnesium is also def good. Lemon Balm is chill. Skullcap can be a more intense herb, i wouldn’t include. Milky Oats should be chill but i am actually allergic so i am uncomfortable being like yeah it’s great because it is not for me.

I love passionflower but also not a chill plant to work with without guidance especially if someone is dealing with any addiction issues. Skullcap is definitely couterindictated for anyone using drugs or alcohol. St.Johns Wort inhibits opioid based meds and i have not read up but i would assume that would include actual opium and heroin because the receptors are the same. Iow, it could really fuck with someone who is on opiod pain meds or whatever. Adaptogens and flower essences tend to be softer medicine but it is a lot of info that is probably going over most folks heads on the why and how and any internal work done alone without an understanding of what one is doing can be harmful. Like don’t underestimate the power of flowers. (>.<) I would recommend acupuncture to about anyone who had went through a traumatic and physically violent event or even a massage if they were afraid of needles and/or eastern medicine. Both will help get stuff moving and by stuff i mean the mental stuff but also the real physical stuff in the muscles such as lactic acid that can build up in stressful events.
